The washing and shrouding of your loved one is the part of the funeral families most want to know is done properly. It is carried out at our own premises, simply, privately and without extravagance.

How the ghusl is carried out
Preparation
The room is prepared and the body is covered throughout. Only those carrying out the ghusl, and family members who wish to help, are present.
The washing
The body is washed with water, sidr and camphor, an odd number of times, beginning with the right side, as taught in the Sunnah.
Drying
The body is dried gently and with modesty preserved at every point.
The kafan
Plain white cotton is used: three pieces for a man, five for a woman. Camphor may be applied before the cloth is closed.
Modesty and dignity
The body is covered at all times, and the attendants are of the same sex as the deceased. Nothing is done that has not been asked for or that is not part of the Sunnah, and nothing is added for appearance.
A relative of the same sex may be present, and many families find it a comfort to help. Others prefer not to be there, and that is equally acceptable. We will never press you either way.
Where the coroner has been involved, or where a death was traumatic, we will tell you plainly what is possible before anything is arranged.
Questions families ask
Who performs the ghusl?
Trained attendants of the same sex as the deceased. Male attendants wash a man, female attendants wash a woman.
Can family members take part?
Yes. A relative of the same sex may be present and may help, and we will explain what is done at each stage.
What is used for the ghusl?
Water, with sidr and camphor, as taught in the Sunnah. The body is washed an odd number of times and then dried.
Do you provide the kafan?
Yes. Plain white cotton cloth is provided as part of the funeral, three pieces for a man and five for a woman.
What happens if the coroner has carried out a post-mortem?
The ghusl is still performed, with care taken over any incisions. We will tell you honestly what is possible in that case.
Where is the ghusl carried out?
At our premises at 73 Mitcham Lane, Streatham, in a private preparation room kept for this purpose.
