How a burial is arranged
Choosing the cemetery
We advise which cemeteries have graves available for a Muslim burial at that moment, and how close each one is to the family.
Booking the grave
The plot is booked with the cemetery office, and the grave is prepared so that the burial faces the qiblah.
The paperwork
The certificate for burial from the registrar, or the coroner's order, is lodged with the cemetery before the grave can be opened.
The janazah
The prayer is arranged at a mosque near the family, or at the cemetery where facilities allow, and timed to fit the burial slot.
The burial
The body is placed in the grave on its right side facing the qiblah, and the family may take part in filling the grave.
Afterwards
The cemetery records the grave reference and we pass it to you, together with the paperwork you will need later.
Cemeteries we work with
Grave availability and cemetery fees change, and are set by the cemetery rather than by us. Both are confirmed with the cemetery office while the funeral is being arranged.

Burial without delay
Islam encourages that burial is not delayed, so we begin arranging the grave as soon as we are asked, in parallel with the paperwork rather than after it. A same-day or next-day burial is often possible where the certificate for burial has been issued and a grave is available.
Where the coroner is involved, the timing depends on when your loved one is released, which no funeral director can control. We will always tell you honestly what stage things are at.
Graves are dug and backfilled by the cemetery's own staff. Memorial stones are placed later, and each cemetery has its own rules about the size and type of memorial permitted in a Muslim section.
